SoundWin: VoIP Hardware Not To Buy

There are many VoIP hardware vendors around. Some are better, some are worse. But there is one which I urge you not to buy. Ever. Under any circumstance. That is a chinese-made piece of buggy hardware called SoundWin, managed by some argentinean guy called Arie Pompas.

My advice: get anything else.

Boingo: Worst Service in the World

You may be tempted to sign up to Boingo, a wireless service provider. Please read before you do so.

First the good part: Boingo works in most airports in the US, as well as Starbucks and some other locations.

Now for the bad part: Cancelling the service is virtually impossible. You are better off trying a chargeback with the bank. There is no cancel button at the user panel. Also, you cannot cancel via email. They claim that it is for security reasons. I wonder where were those security reasons when I signed up. So, you have no choice but call customer service if you want to cancel, and that is where the fun starts. You will have to wait forever before you get to talk to an agent. I gave up way before that, and I ended up calling the bank instead.

Speaking about customer service, I had an awful experience in Europe. They claim that they have coverage in Spain's Barajas airport. You keep getting messages from the Boingo App saying "Login to Boingo here", only it does not connect (it says Whoops, We're unable to process your request. Contact Customer Service). I tried sending an email to customer support, and I got a canned reply... one week later! Maybe they thought I was the main character in the movie "The Terminal"

Then I moved to Paris, couldn't use it there either. London: same thing.

Bottom line: stay away.

Launching Ring2Skype, a free replacement for SkypeIn

We have exciting news! We have just launched a new free service:

Ring2Skype allows people without a Skype account to call you on your Skype. Once you sign up (in just 1 simple step), you are assigned a phone number and a private extension. All calls to that extension ring at your Skype. Numbers are available in 31 countries (!!!) and over 100 different regions.

Why may you want to have a regular phone number ringing at your Skype? Well, you may want your internet-impaired grandmother (are there any left?) to call you without having a computer. Or, if you are an immigrant, you may want to have a phone number in your home country for your friends to call. You may also want people on the road to call you from their cellphones.

The service is 100% free and community-driven. The community will have the opportunity to define the service, record the voice prompts, and decide the countries to add numbers.

One way or another, the service launched this week, and it already has over 2000 users, so it definitely fills a need.

JetNumbers for Skype - Now Free! Tokens available

We are glad to announce that we just launched a free JetNumbers for Skype program. With this service you can receive incoming PSTN calls from 32 countries! The caller pays a local call, you pay nothing, zero, nada, zilch.

When you sign up you will be assigned a phone number and an extension. Calls to that extension will ring in you Skype. It is that simple.

Since we are overwhelmed by requests and we do not want the system to crash, we are offering the service only to holders of tokens. Below you will find a few, for our loyal blog readers. To sign up, go to our web page, and click on Free Skype. You will be asked for your skype id and a token.

Please mark the tokens that you used up. And if the tokens run out, don't despair, you can sign up and we'll assign new tokens as we build capacity.

If you have a popular blog and want to offer tokens to your readers, contact us. We are assigning tokens at this stage only to blogs with highest traffic.
